Why turn-based RPGs feel right on a phone

I keep coming back to turn-based RPGs on mobile, and I finally figured out why. They're the one genre that doesn't punish you for getting interrupted. The bus arrives, you lock the phone mid-battle, and nothing is lost. That fit is almost perfect.

Playing Emberfall Chronicles this month reminded me how much the format rewards thinking. You get to actually plan a turn instead of mashing in a panic. On a touchscreen, where precise timing is harder, that trade is a gift.

If you're new to the genre on mobile, start with the battle speed set low and read the skill descriptions properly. The games that respect you give you all the info to plan — you just have to slow down and use it.

The downside is some of these games stuff in too many menus. The good ones keep it clean. When a developer gets that balance right, there's nothing better to carry in your pocket.
