Tilt or buttons? Settling the racing control debate

June 21, 2026 · Markus Fehr

Every mobile racer makes you choose: steer by tilting the phone or tap on-screen buttons. I used to think buttons were the serious choice. After playing Neon Drift Rush for a week, I'm not so sure.

Tilt gets a bad reputation because the default sensitivity is usually cranked too high. Drop it a few notches and suddenly it feels natural, almost like holding a wheel. Your hands aren't blocking the screen, which matters more than people admit.

Buttons win when the track is twitchy and you need instant, exact inputs. For long flowing tracks, tilt felt smoother and more immersive to me. The honest answer is it depends on the game and your hands.

My tip: don't judge either control scheme in the first race. Give it ten minutes and adjust the sensitivity before you decide. Half the complaints online are just people playing on default settings.
